When History Finds its Way into Stamps and Coins | Garhwal Post 08/24/2026

"When History Finds its Way into Stamps and Coins" In an age of smartphones, social media and everything being available at the click of a button, hobbies that encourage us to slow down, observe and discover can be incredibly valuable. Philately and numismatics are not merely hobbies of collecting stamps and coins; they are hobbies of curiosity.

Every stamp can lead you to a person, an event, a place or an idea. Every coin can make you ask why it was issued, what its symbols represent, and what was happening in the country when it entered circulation. In that sense, a collection is never really complete — because every new piece opens the door to another story.

I would encourage young people to give this hobby a chance. Start small. Pick a theme that interests you — freedom fighters, India’s space journey, wildlife, sports, the Constitution, monuments or even the history of your own city. Begin with whatever you can find. Research it. Talk to other collectors. Visit a philatelic bureau or a coin exhibition. Slowly, those little pieces of paper and metal will begin to tell you stories that no textbook alone can tell.

"A flag ceremony offered an irresistible opportunity. My attire was inspired by Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, and I approached portions of the ceremony as though we were presenting our own episode of Fun with Flags. Yes, there was a Flash T-shirt involved.

We still conducted a proper first-day ceremony and celebrated another addition to American philately. But we also laughed, and I think that matters.

Stamp collecting has plenty of room for serious scholarship. We study printing methods, varieties, postal rates, routes, cancellations and countless other details. We build exhibits, publish research and spend years pursuing specialties. But every once in a while, it is worth remembering what probably attracted most of us to collecting in the first place — it was fun."

What does it mean to carry a family’s legacy without wearing the uniform?
For Pune photographer Sandeep Boyat, it meant spending 15 years preserving the stories of those who did.

His grandfather was a freedom fighter who served in the Azad Hind Fauj. His father served in the Indian Army. While his family expected him to follow them into uniform, Boyat chose a different way to serve.

Since 2011, he has travelled across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bengaluru and Delhi, collecting rare stamps, First Day Covers and vintage postcards that tell the story of India’s armed forces.
