Sometimes teams say, “We are aligned,” when what they really mean is, “We are not fighting right now.”

But peace is not the same as alignment.

A team can be polite and still unclear.
A board can agree in the meeting and still move in different directions afterward.
A ministry team can love the mission and still be confused about priorities, roles, and next steps.

Real alignment requires more than good intentions. It requires honest conversation, shared language, clear decisions, and the courage to name what is not working before it becomes conflict.

This is especially true in churches and mission-driven organizations. The mission matters too much for everyone to be quietly interpreting it in their own way.

Healthy leadership does not assume alignment.
It builds it.

My wife and I just celebrated 23 years of marriage.
That milestone means a lot to me.
This is my second marriage. I lost my first wife to breast cancer after we had been together for six years. When my second wife married me, she stepped into a life that already included two young children. She became a wife and a mother at the same time.
To say the early years were rocky would be an understatement.
But by God’s grace, patience, humility, forgiveness, and a lot of learning, we have made it through thick and thin.
Over my 25+ years in full-time ministry, I have advised, coached, and counseled more couples than I can count. One thing I have learned is this: strong relationships do not happen by accident. Couples need tools. They need training. They need help before the relationship is in crisis.
We live in a world of incredible progress in technology, business, entertainment, and personal freedom, yet many people are still struggling in their closest relationships.
Relationships are at the core of human flourishing. But too many couples do not have a simple and practical way to work through conflict, communication breakdowns, resentment, unmet expectations, and emotional distance before the relationship begins to fall apart.
In the U.S., the CDC reported 672,502 divorces in 2023 across 45 reporting states and D.C., with a divorce rate of 2.4 per 1,000 people. Behind those numbers are real people, real families, real financial consequences, and real emotional pain.
Not everyone wants marriage or a long-term relationship, and that is their choice. But many people do. And many of them need practical support earlier than they usually receive it.
That is why I believe couples need a private, low-stigma relationship operating system — something that helps them address issues before formal counseling becomes the only option.
Not a replacement for therapy in serious situations, but a practical guide for everyday couples: guided conversations, conflict-resolution tools, relationship assessments, repair exercises, and next steps that help people reconnect.
At Dumornay Coaching, this is part of the work I feel called to do: helping couples, families, leaders, and communities build healthier relationships before things break down.
Healthy relationships are not automatic.
They are built.

Earlier this year, I stepped down from my role as Executive Director of a nonprofit. Since then, I have been building my leadership consulting work while also growing Oulala, our spicy peanut butter brand.

It has been fun, meaningful, and yes, very busy juggling both. But I am not complaining; I actually enjoy it.

I have never been diagnosed with ADHD, though I sometimes wonder. My mind tends to move in many directions at once, and ideas, projects, and momentum often energize me.

Recently, I made a different choice. I decided to start practicing Sabbath.

I stopped everything. No farmer’s market. No coaching. No consulting. I rode to Morgan–Monroe State Forest, had a picnic, connected with God in nature, and spent time hammocking.

It felt so good.

To those who have been practicing Sabbath: well done. You may be onto something important. To those who haven’t: give it a try.

Rest is not wasted time. Sometimes it is exactly what we need to become whole again.

Thank you everyone, for the kind birthday wishes. This one was particularly special as I spent it in Miami with my amazing wife and some special friends to launch Oulala.Food's Manba. More details to follow.

Sometimes we just need a little help in the form of empathetic listening and wise guidance to help improve the important relationships in our lives.
