Bruce Springsteen is as bold as ever, and he is not backing off his criticism of Donald Trump and his administration. In the live recording he just released, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen’s political statements are front and center. At the start of his Manchester concert, captured on this EP, he declared, “In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.” He urged, “Rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring.”
Springsteen’s words on the recording go even further as he warns, “There’s some very strange and dangerous things happening out there right now. In America, individuals are being persecuted for exercising their right to free speech and expressing their dissent. This is happening now.” He didn’t hesitate to call out Trump’s government for “taking sadistic pleasure in the pain that they inflict on loyal American workers,” “rolling back historic civil rights legislation,” and “abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom.”
Even after Trump lashed out at him online, Springsteen stood his ground. On the recording, he assures fans, “The America I have sung about for 50 years is genuine, and despite its flaws, it is a remarkable country filled with incredible people. Therefore, we will endure this moment.” With this new release, Springsteen is not just performing—he is rallying Americans to keep fighting for democracy and justice.
