♟️ Markham True North Open 2026 — What a Weekend! 🇨🇦

Three unforgettable days. Six classical rounds. Countless inspiring moments.

The inaugural Markham True North Open 2026 – A Canada Day Celebration has come to a successful close, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who made this event possible. Together, we welcomed players from across Ontario and beyond for one of the largest classical chess events in our community.

This tournament was never just about trophies or ratings.

It was about creating an environment where players could:
♟️ Think deeply.
♟️ Build resilience.
♟️ Learn to perform under pressure.
♟️ Experience the endurance required in serious tournament chess.

One of the highlights was our bold decision to schedule three classical rounds on Saturday. It was challenging, but that’s exactly the point. Strong chess is not only about calculation—it is also about focus, discipline, and the ability to make good decisions when your mind is tired.

As an organizer, I also learned an important lesson. We made a mistake before Round 1 that delayed the start of the tournament. Like every chess player who blunders, we accepted responsibility, learned from it, adjusted quickly, and worked hard to ensure the rest of the event ran smoothly.

Another moment that will stay with us was watching dozens of young players quietly line up for dinner while several games were still in progress. No shouting. No running. Just patience and respect for those still competing. That simple scene reflected the culture we hope to build through chess.

We were also reminded that health always comes first. We wish Joshua a speedy and full recovery after having to withdraw for medical reasons. Our chess community is thinking of you.

Congratulations to all of our champions, medalists, and every player who challenged themselves over the board. Whether you won a trophy or not, every well-fought game is another step forward.

A special thank you to:
❤️ Our players for your determination.
❤️ Parents for your trust and unwavering support.
❤️ Volunteers for countless hours behind the scenes.
❤️ Our arbiters for ensuring fair play and professionalism.
❤️ Grandmaster Evgeny Bareev, former World No. 4 and former Head Coach of the Russian National Team, for presenting the awards and inspiring our players with his presence.

Finally, thank you to everyone who helped create something larger than a tournament.

Together, we are building a chess community where players can focus comfortably on the board, families feel welcome, friendships grow, and young people develop character alongside chess skills.
