Exactly 10 years ago, one e-bike journey of 8,200 kms across America changed my life profoundly. 👇

I never thought I would be an entrepreneur. The plan was simple: finish my PhD, become a professor, spend my life researching materials. At Purdue, I was developing coating materials for brain aneurysm stents. At the University of Maryland, I worked on nanocomposites. Batteries weren't even on my radar.

Then, in 2013, I rode an e-bike for the first time. The technology amazed me, but one question wouldn't leave me alone: if it's this good, why isn't everyone riding one?

For six years, I rode every single day and studied the industry. The missing piece wasn't the engineering; it was awareness.

So in 2016, to popularize and raise awareness, I rode 8,200 km across 12 states in 34 days, setting a Guinness World Record. But the record was never the point. If I could ride across the country, then someone’s 10 km commute is a no-brainer.

In September 2016, I switched my Ph.D focus to battery materials and wrote my thesis on Li-ion cathodes. Then in 2018, I cold-emailed Dr. Jeff Dahn, one of the most respected battery scientists alive, and did my post-doc with him in Canada, supported by MITACS.

That's where Zen began.

Today we've built thousands of e-bikes and thousands of battery packs, and we have learned a great deal.

One exploratory ride became a PhD, a post-doc, a company, and a commitment to this industry, bringing like-minded people together, and now we are scaling beyond E-bikes to batteries that can power homes and the grid.
