Hidden doesn't mean weak. Full tang, 6mm spine, one knife for the whole trip. New release.

We got asked to build a one-knife knife. Here's what that brief actually demands.

A hunter who packs a single blade for a week in the bush needs three knives in one. A dressing knife, which wants reach and a fine tip. A camp knife, which wants thickness and a tang that can take abuse. And a food knife, which wants an edge that's still shaving sharp on day six.

The Ridgeback is our answer. The blade is 7.25 inches of D2 tool steel with a genuine 5 to 6 millimeter spine. That's close to double what most production hunters carry, and it's the difference between a knife that batons kindling and one that begs you not to. The stonewash finish is practical too: scratches vanish into the texture instead of scarring a polish.

The tang is the part you can't see, and it's the best part. Full length, hidden inside the lacewood, pinned through the pommel with brass. All the strength of a full tang, none of the cold steel spine against your palm in November, and a handle that looks like furniture-grade woodwork.

The guard is hand-forged Damascus, patterned differently on every knife. The sheath is handmade leather with embossed snake-texture panels and a button strap.

12.25 inches overall. Engraving available for $20. New in the shop this week.

Clip point, brass back, bolster, escutcheon, butt cap. The anatomy of a proper bowie, built the traditional way in D2. $405 on sale.

Everyone photographs Damascus. But here's a truth from the forge: the bowies that made the legend were bright steel.
Walk into any 1830s cutler's shop and this is what left the bench. A mirror-ground clip point. A brass strip down the spine to catch an opponent's edge. A heavy bolster, a plate on the grip for the owner's initials, a brass cap at the butt. Every piece had a name and a job.

Our Jim Bowie Edition brings that build back in modern working steel: 10.75 inches of D2 at 59-61 HRC, black G10 where the old knives carried ebony, and every brass fitting where tradition put it. The escutcheon plate on the handle is where your $20 engraving goes, exactly how the originals carried a man's name.
15.5 inches. Half price at $405.
Made in our shop, one at a time.

Here's the honest breakdown.
The blade is Mosaic Feather Damascus, and the feather is not a pattern you stumble into. The smith has to draw the 15N20 and 1095 billet in a precise sequence to split the layers into chevrons that read like the barbs of a feather. Every hour at the anvil can ruin the previous ten. Simpler patterns forgive mistakes. The feather does not. That forging time is most of what you're paying for.
Then the guard. On most knives, even good ones, the guard is plain steel. On this one it's forged separately from Fire Pattern Damascus, so a second pattern, flame-grained, sits against the feather blade. A detail most makers skip because it doubles the pattern work.
The handle is genuine antler horn, shaped from a real shed, which means the texture and grain of your grip exist on exactly one knife. The sheath is Italian leather, hand-embossed with a red deer motif. And the whole thing arrives in a wooden presentation box, because a blade at this level shouldn't ship in bubble wrap.
One honest note, as always: it's a semi-tang collector build. It takes real cutting tasks confidently at 58-60 HRC, but it's a display-grade piece first, not a batoning tool.
$1,400 right now, down from $2,500, and stock is genuinely low. If someone in your life has earned a once-in-a-lifetime gift, this is the one in our lineup.
