Bear Warning - Kananaskis Lakes Trail Road and Area including all facilities and trails along the Kananaskis Lakes Trail (KLT) Road between Highway 40 and Upper Kananaskis Lake, and along the Spray Road between the KLT and Lower Kananaskis Lake.

WHY? Grizzly bears, including multiple bears with cubs of varying ages, are frequenting campgrounds and trails. A grizzly bear with her first litter of cubs has been exhibiting defensive behavior when surprised by people at close range. A grizzly bear attacked a man biking the Dome Trail in Anchorage Saturday afternoon.

Several bear warnings and closures are in place in parts of Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park.

The latest notices include a Kananaskis closure tied to a grizzly bear bluff charge and a Banff closure linked to black bears displaying food-seeking behaviour.

Alberta Parks and Parks Canada are reminding visitors to check current advisories before heading out, carry bear spray, secure food and scented items, keep pets on leash and report bear sightings.

The Lake Minnewanka area is closed to travel after black bears began showing food-seeking behaviour.

Parks Canada has shut the following under the Canada National Parks Act, until further notice:

Lake Minnewanka Trail
Aylmer Pass Trail
Campgrounds Lm8, Lm9, Lm11, Lm20, Lm22, Lm31

There is no entry permitted. Fines for violating the closure can reach $25,000.

Food-seeking behaviour means bears have started associating the area with human food, which puts both visitors and the bears themselves at risk.

The closure protects people and gives the wildlife the space it needs to move through without further habituation.

Bear warnings, closures in effect before weekend in Kananaskis, Banff.

Heading to the mountains this weekend? Bear warnings and trail closures are in effect for several popular areas in Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park, including Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, the Kananaskis Lakes area, Grassi Lakes, Spray Lakes Road and Lake Minnewanka.

Visitors are being reminded to check conditions before heading out, carry bear spray, keep pets leashed, secure food and scented items, and report wildlife sightings.
