If youโ€™re working out at home and have limited equipment, try incorporating one of these three techniques:

1๏ธโƒฃ Add a pause โ€“ The longer the pause, the more challenging the exercise becomes.

2๏ธโƒฃ Slow down the tempo โ€“ Controlling the movement, especially on the lowering phase, increases the difficulty and challenges your muscles even more.

3๏ธโƒฃ Add a 1ยผ rep โ€“ By adding an extra quarter rep, you increase your time under tension, making the movement much more demanding.

Sometimes, itโ€™s not about lifting heavier- itโ€™s about training smarter๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป.

At one time or another, I believed these things too.โฃ
โฃ
And Iโ€™ve seen firsthand what this toxic messaging can make women believe about themselves- and how deeply it can stick.โฃ

It makes you believe that your worth is tied to a number. โฃ
That food has to be earned.โฃ
That exercise is punishment.โฃ
That the scale determines whether theyโ€™ve had a โ€œgoodโ€ or โ€œbadโ€ week.โฃ
โฃ
And after years of growth and healing, I couldnโ€™t disagree more. โฃ
โฃ
My goal has never been to help women become smaller at all costs.โฃ
โฃ
Itโ€™s to help them become stronger.โฃ
More confident.โฃ
More resilient.โฃ
And to build habits that actually improve their quality of life- not consume it.โฃ
โฃ
Because health is about so much more than the number on the scale.โฃ
โฃ
Itโ€™s about having the energy to play with your kids.โฃ
Feeling confident walking into the gym.โฃ
Building muscle that supports you for decades to come.โฃ
Sleeping better.โฃ
Feeling capable in your own body.โฃ
Living a life that isnโ€™t controlled by food or ruled by guilt.โฃ

Those are the things worth chasing.โฃ

Not because I didnโ€™t want to go, but because I didnโ€™t want to โ€œcheatโ€ on my diet.โฃ

I wore my discipline like a badge of honor. I thought being the person who never missed a workout, never ate the cake and never deviated from the plan was something to be proud of.โฃ

But that discipline came at a cost.โฃ

I missed birthdays.โฃ
Celebrations.โฃ
Family gatherings.โฃ
Moments that can never be recreated.โฃ

All because I was so focused on controlling what I ate and avoiding anything that might throw me off track.โฃ

And honestly? It left me feeling disconnected- from the people I loved and from myself.โฃ

For years, Iโ€™ve shown up online sharing my passion for strength training, helping women build confidence in and out of the gym and encouraging them to pursue becoming their strongest selves. But behind the workouts, the coaching and the business, thereโ€™s been another journey Iโ€™ve been navigating quietly.โฃ

In this episode, Iโ€™m opening up about my health diagnoses, how theyโ€™ve impacted my life and some of the challenges Iโ€™ve faced behind the scenes. โ€œHello, my name is Nikki Melligan. I am a Certified Personal Trainer (2002), Inside Flow Yoga Teacher (2024) & a Level 2 Restorative Yoga Teacher (2025). My passion as a Personal Trainer is working with clients to help nurture their belief in themselves and that they can do anything that they put their minds to no matter how big or small๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป. โฃ

After being an athlete for two decades and an avid Crossfitter for five years, my belief was that rest was unproductive and that I was being lazy by not doing anything. My days would be filled with more things than I had hours in the day for and I wouldnโ€™t stop until 5 minutes before bedtime. I would then struggle to fall asleep at night as my body didnโ€™t know what rest was or how to down regulate my nervous system. I would then wake up in the morning exhausted and start all over again. โฃ
โฃ
In 2020 I found Yoga/Meditation and everything in my life changed for me. I finally was able to have a wonderful nights sleep and my body finally experienced deep rest in a way that I never knew was possible๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ. โฃ

With the knowledge and experience I embody from the fitness world and the Restorative Yoga world, I am now able to look at these two modalities with a more balanced approach. The common theme with both of these modalities is they create mental resiliency to face the daily challenges of the human experience.โฃ

I remember when I was deep in my eating disorder, I genuinely believed that quote.โฃ

But after years of healing, growing, and rebuilding my relationship with myself, Iโ€™ve learned that nothing could be further from the truth๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ.โฃ

My eating disorder kept me stuck- stuck in a cycle that felt impossible to escape.โฃ

It consumed my thoughts, dictated my choices, and stole so much of my energy and joy.โฃ

Everything started to change when I shifted my focus away from being smaller and toward becoming stronger. I began fueling my body, healing my relationship with food, and learning to appreciate myself for more than my appearance.โฃ
