Critical Mass is commonly known as a cycling event. This is not an organized or orderly fashioned event. We made the cover page of The Independent too.
Its mission is to aware the motorized vehicle driving crowd to use cycle as a mode of transportation and also ensure safe roads for all cyclists. For this purpose the common rule of critical mass is that all cyclers gather in the evening of the last working day of each month, and move around the city randomly going where they want to and thus creating awareness of the need for better road policy f
or bikers and also the need for less motorized vehicles. But in most cities some active groups take the charge and thus make sure peoples safety. Its vision is actually hoping that someday all this awareness will ensure greener world for us. Critical Mass was first initiated in Stockholm, Sweden in the mid 1970s. But the first ride within the present wave took place on Friday, September 25, 1992 at 6 pm in San Francisco. Now-a-days a Critical Mass event is organized in nearly 300 countries. In Bangladesh, The first Critical Mass was done on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 7.30 am in Dhaka. Here instead of the last working day of the month we are doing on Friday morning. The ride was a total success creating buzz around the city people on why we were doing CM and what is its objective. On Friday, October 28, 2011 at 8.00 am second Critical Mass took place where over 200 people joined and made the headlines in popular newspapers like The Daily Star, Independent and Prothom Alo. And with each passing Critical Mass, we see more enthusiastic people joining the event and making it a success. Though it should be added that the CM in Bangladesh is bit different then happening in other countries. In other parts of the world Friday is the last working day of the week, and riding in evening means the bikers face the most commuting people of the city which is the working class. But in a country like Bangladesh where traffic is a daily event, creating a CM on Thursday evening will mean walking your cycle through the heavy traffic while breathing carbon oxide. So the members of the cycling group thought its better for Friday Morning, which is holiday for max participation and awareness to people. Critical Mass is not involved with any political parties or organizations. The team of people who come together and organize CM are very passionate about cycling and wants a safer road for their commute purpose and also wants a healthy living condition of their beloved Dhaka city. So if you love to cycle and also love your city and this world, please join us in creating Critical Mass a success and thus ensuring healthy living condition for our next generation. All you need is a cycle and meet us on the last Friday of each month at 8 am in front of Parliament House in Manik Mia Avenue.
