Prepare for the 2026 Fall SAT Reading and Writing Section and North South University (NSU) Scholarship and Admission Test with Bright Prep

Northsouth University will host the NSU World Cup Quiz Challenge 2026 on its campus on July 17, bringing together football enthusiasts from schools and colleges in celebration of the FIFA World Cup.

The competition is open to students from Class 8 to HSC and A-levels, who will compete in teams of two. Participants will be tested on the history of the FIFA World Cup, legendary players and records, memorable matches, iconic moments, and different aspects of global football culture.

Organized by NSU's School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), the event aims to demonstrate that higher education encompasses intellectual and co-curricular engagement beyond the classroom.

"NSU places equal importance on the intellectual growth and academic development of students across the disciplines of science, business, humanities, and social sciences," said Professor Dr. MD Rizwanul Islam, Dean of SHSS.

Interested students must register online in teams of two to participate in the competition.

"The primary objective of this initiative is to channel young people's enthusiasm for the World Cup into a positive and intellectually engaging platform," said Irtifa Zaman, a lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy and one of the event coordinators.

Tasnim Ima, a lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Political Science, said the competition would encourage students to participate in knowledge-based co-curricular activities while giving them an opportunity to experience NSU's academic environment and modern campus facilities.

The winning team will receive a cash prize of BDT 50,000, while the first and second runners-up will receive BDT 30,000 and BDT 20,000, respectively. Every participant will also be awarded a certificate of participation.

Raisul Islam, a student of the Department of Media, Communication, and Journalism at NSU, said the event would provide a valuable platform for networking, learning, and healthy competition, allowing participants to build new connections and exchange ideas.

North South University (NSU) in collaboration with the Bangladesh Society for Modeling and Simulation (BSMS) organized a day-long program on June 12 at NSU's Audi-801 auditorium to promote simulation science and digital innovation.

The Center for Migration Studies (CMS) of the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG) at North South University (NSU) organized a live webinar on Monday titled “Prime Minister’s Visit to Malaysia: Will it Open the Closed Labor Market?”

The discussion examined the possibility of reopening Malaysia’s labor market for Bangladeshi workers in the wake of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to the country. The session was moderated by Associate Professor Salim Reza, Coordinator of the Center for Migration Studies at NSU.

Bangladeshi migrant worker Ashraful Alam, who is based in Malaysia, shared firsthand observations about the conditions faced by Bangladeshi workers there. He described the difficulties confronting workers, particularly those in irregular status and those detained or serving prison sentences. He pointed to problems involving documentation, work permit renewal, high recruitment and immigration costs, dependence on employers, calling visa complications, and the lack of reliable information and legal support. He also criticized the quality of services provided by the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. Md. Mahbubul Haque, senior lecturer at the University Sultan Zainal Abidin in Malaysia, said there has been no formal confirmation of any agreement related to reopening Malaysia’s labor market. He noted that a previous high-level visit by the interim government had also raised labor migration issues, but without any visible progress. He expressed hope that the current visit could help find practical solutions for irregular Bangladeshi workers, as well as those detained or imprisoned in Malaysia. He also emphasized the need for policy attention to Rohingyas in Malaysia.

Dr. Mohammad Jalal Uddin Sikder, associate professor and member of CMS at NSU, said Bangladesh and Malaysia already have a significant number of agreements and cooperation frameworks. He argued that future discussions should not be limited to labor migration alone and should instead explore broader economic cooperation. He identified the halal industry as a promising area and pointed to opportunities in investment, trade, certification, food processing, and services.

Imrul Kayes, special correspondent of Banglavision Television, said the government must take the situation of Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia more seriously. He stressed that future discussions should focus not only on sending new workers, but also on ensuring the rights, security, documentation, and welfare of those already there. He also called for a transparent, accountable, and affordable recruitment system to prevent syndicates from controlling the process.

S. N. Azad, senior lecturer and member of CMS at NSU, said the workers’ meeting with the Prime Minister has raised hopes among Bangladeshi migrants in Malaysia. However, he warned that a visit alone will not resolve the long-standing crisis. According to him, the system suffers from weak preparation, excessive bureaucratic control, inadequate information, and a lack of institutional transparency. He also called for stronger cooperation between civil society groups in Bangladesh and Malaysia to protect migrant workers’ rights.

Ambassador Sufiur Rahman, Senior Research Fellow at NSU’s SIPG, said the Prime Minister’s visit to Malaysia should be viewed in a broader context beyond labor migration. He said the visit also covered trade, investment, possible free trade agreements, regional cooperation, and overall bilateral relations. He added that because Malaysia’s economy is changing, Bangladesh should prioritize producing more highly skilled workers who can meet the demands of the Malaysian labor market.

The webinar brought together academics, migration researchers, journalists, students, and other participants.
