Six days. That's all that's left before VIC streams reopen for trout. NSW follows on October 3rd.

However you're doing it this season, solo at first light, a group trip with your mates, a guided drift, or just sneaking in a cast after work, we want to hear about it.

Drop your plans in the comments. Let's see who's got their season planned to a T😉

A new two-year Victorian trial is set to make it easier for recreational anglers to get their hands on freshwater yabbies for bait.

From 1 September 2026, the VFA will allow permit holders to legally collect live freshwater yabbies (Cherax destructor) to sell directly to anglers or to bait & tackle stores.

Why does it matter?🎣

Fresh yabbies are prime bait for chasing Murray cod and golden perch, so this could be a great step towards improving the supply of natural bait for Victorian anglers.

Under the trial, permit holders can collect:

🦞 Up to 250 yabbies per day
🦞 Up to 500 in possession
🦞 Sell them directly to fishers or bait & tackle stores

Permits are $171.46 for 12 months, with permits free for applicants under 18.

The trial kicks off on 1 September, with successful applicants able to start operating from 11 September.

For the full details and permit applications, head to the VFA website and search “bait yabbies”🦞 or head to https://vfa.vic.gov.au/recreational-fishing/bait-freshwater-yabby-permit-trial?_ga=2.119514569.1364572406.1787794866-1448820576.1784693484
