🧐 MARATHON SORENESS… OR AN INJURY?
This is one of the questions we're expecting to hear a LOT this week.
After 42.2km, it's completely normal to feel sore, stiff and tired.
But there is a difference between general post-race soreness and a pain that deserves some attention.
🚩 Things we'd be more interested in include:
• Pain that's sharp or very localised
• Pain that's getting worse rather than better
• Significant swelling
• Pain that's changing the way you walk
• A ni**le that was there before the marathon and has now worsened
• Pain that isn't settling over the next few days
You don't necessarily need to panic if something hurts.
But you also don't have to "wait and see" for three weeks.
If you're unsure, get it assessed.
Early advice can often mean a much easier road back to running.

I have been doing running assessments for 20 years, and last week I met a young chap called Nic, who broke the TBM clinic record for lowest cadence. He was running at 138 steps / minute.
Here is a VIDEO of Nic's running assessment if you're interested to see what the difference between 138 and 170 cadence looks like and what we are doing to fix his shin pain

UTMB is this weekend. We have quite a few members racing over the various distances — good luck to all of you, I hope it goes well.
Looking at who's in contention for the UTMB titles: Ruth Croft is the defending champion and probably the favourite to take it out again this year. She's the only woman to have won all three UTMB World Series Finals distances (OCC, CCC and UTMB itself). Courtney Dauwalter is the three-time champion (2019, 2021, 2023) but was off the pace last year, fading to 10th after leading at halfway. Lucy Bartholomew has had top-10 finishes at UTMB three years running (10th in 2023, 10th in 2024, 7th in 2025) — so she could be a real threat to the leaders this year.
The men's UTMB field has been reshaped by injury. Kilian Jornet (4-time champion) is out with a knee injury needing surgery. Jim Walmsley (the course record holder) is out with a knee injury from Western States in June, and defending champion Tom Evans pulled out on 13 August with no reason given. With all three gone, the new favourites are Ben Dhiman (2nd in 2025), Vincent Bouillard (2024 winner), Josh Wade (3rd in 2025) and Baptiste Chassagne (2nd in 2024).
I imagine there'll be a few people losing sleep this weekend — the UTMB live streaming is pretty awesome.

UTMB is only a week away
Are you or someone you know taking part?
How are you approaching your mental game?
I reckon you have probably nailed the physical side of things but how much thought have you put into the mental aspect. What advice would you share with someone getting ready for OCC, CCC, UTMB next week

THE TRAIL SKILL THAT SAVES YOUR RACE
Here's one of the most underrated trail-running skills:
Knowing when NOT to run.
Power hiking is almost always much more efficient than running up a steep climb. Especially if it is early in the race.
For a 10km trail race, the strategy might be different from a marathon.
And for an ultra – it is even more essential you get it right.
Trail running isn't about proving you can run every metre.
It's about getting to the finish line as efficiently as possible.
Are you a “run every hill” runner or a “power hike when it gets steep” runner?
KOSCI TRAINING: ALTITUDE CHANGES THE GAME
Training for Kosci or another high-altitude event?
One thing you need to understand is that altitude makes everything feel harder!
You may notice:
Your heart rate rises more quickly
Breathing feels harder
It is difficult to stick to your usual pace
Your legs can fatigue sooner
The biggest mistake is trying to force your normal sea-level pace. You need to learn to run by effort.
On climbs especially, focus on maintaining a sustainable effort where your breathing feels normal.
And remember — you don't need every training run to replicate race altitude.
You need to arrive with the fitness, strength and pacing skills to handle it.
What impact has altitude had on you during Kosci?
