What if the most important part of your practice is not what you do on your mat but what you take home ?
Often Yoga shows up where you least expect it.
It’s in the breath you take before you react.
It’s in the moment you say “No, not today, I need to rest”
It’s when you catch the story and then release it, returning to peace instead.
It’s when you speak to yourself as you would a loved one.
It’s when you choose to surrender, to release, to swim with the tide rather than against it.
Yoga doesn’t just happen on your mat, it’s also what you take home.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PRACTICE TAKES YOU SOMEWHERE YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND YET?

On the mat, the known is familiar territory:

the pose you understand,
the side that feels easier,
the prop you instinctively reach for,
the practice that no longer surprises you.

The unknown begins somewhere else.

A pose that humbles.
An instruction the body does not yet grasp.
The silence of a longer hold.
A place where the body’s intelligence has not yet arrived.

What happens there?

Does the breath change?
Does the mind resist?
Do you want to leave the pose early?

“Venture from the known to the unknown.”
— Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar

This is not an invitation to be reckless.

It is an invitation to trust the method enough to continue exploring what we do not yet understand.

Because practice is not only about repeating what already works.
Sometimes the real study begins where familiarity ends.

The known is where we rest.
The unknown is where we grow.

💬 What is one pose or practice that once felt completely foreign to you, but now feels like home?

I learned this hold during my Teacher Training. Place one hand on your forehead and the other at the base of your skull. A somatic self-hold technique (or front-occipital hold) that calms the nervous system. This gesture signals safety to the brain, helping shift your body out of a stress response by connecting the thinking and survival centres.
Try it while breathing slowly and deeply.

Sometimes everything lands exactly where it should. The breath, the words, the shapes, the energy.
We started this morning with the Anapanasati. Sutra and it was magic !
Setting us up for an intentional connected practice where we could really breathe, really feel and really really rest.
It was one of those mornings where everything was just aaaaah.
Thankful for all that shared 🙏

Last week I had the pleasure of practicing with my littlest Yoga teacher.
Without any prompting he says “Let’s do some Yoga , I’ll show you how.”
Some of the shapes I hadn’t seen before 😳but when he exclaimed “you did it “ I must admit I was pleased 😀 Not because I had achieved anything in particular but because we shared such a joyous moment.
As a teacher it’s sometimes hard to find time to be a student but when I do I’m never disappointed.
Join me Wednesday 6 pm and Sunday 9 am this week thespacewellbeing
