Last week at bush kindy, making bush bread and lemon Myrtle butter.
Cooking over a fire and sharing meals offer rich learning opportunities in the early years. They bring together practical life skills, sensory exploration, social connection, responsibility and an understanding of safety in a meaningful, hands-on way.
When children cook over a fire, they are learning to respect and understand risk. They begin to recognise that fire is a useful tool that requires care, boundaries and responsibility. Preparing ingredients, using utensils, stirring, cooking and cleaning up all provide opportunities to develop independence, coordination, problem-solving and confidence. They also experience early scientific concepts as they observe how heat transforms food, how fire behaves and how different ingredients change through the cooking process.
There is also something incredibly valuable about the sensory experience of cooking outdoors. The smell of food cooking over the fire, the warmth, the crackling of wood and the changing textures and flavours all invite children to slow down and engage with their environment. These experiences help build curiosity about where food comes from, how it is prepared and our relationship with the natural world.
Sharing the meal afterwards adds another layer of learning. Sitting together creates opportunities for conversation, listening, turn-taking and connection. Children practise serving themselves, pouring, sharing, waiting for others and contributing to the group. They can explore new foods in a relaxed and social environment while developing confidence and independence.
Perhaps most importantly, preparing and sharing food gives children a genuine sense of contribution and belonging. There is something special about gathering around a fire, knowing you helped prepare what is being eaten, and sitting together as a community to enjoy it. These simple experiences nurture connection, responsibility and a growing understanding that we all have something valuable to contribute. šæš„.
