What is the 'answer'? Is there even one? I once interviewed Mike Turtur when he was race director of the TDU and he said his greatest fear was always some 'idiot’ doing something crazy out on the course. You can have the best safety plans in the world, but you can’t mitigate every possible scenario 😢
The tragic death of 19-year-old Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal has left the cycling world asking difficult questions about safety, responsibility and the risks inherent in road racing.
Can road racing ever be truly safe? You could argue not, and the reality is if we want to eliminate the risks entirely, closed, fenced and purpose-built circuits may provide the answer.
But that’s not really road racing, is it?

A heartbreaking response to a truly heartbreaking moment. Jez Cox may not be one of the world's best known cycling commentators, but he's all class and brought a deep sense of humanity and compassion to such a horrible moment overnight in Portugal. Thank you mate, and of course our deepest condolences go to the Tarling family as such a tragic time 😢

Great racing again, this time up mighty Ventoux, with a change at the top of the GC. Exciting finish coming up with two stages to go and the top 3 separated by just 39 seconds.
