CHARGEBACKS: A REAL RISK FOR SMALL BUSINESS

A chargeback happens when a customer disputes a card payment through their bank or card provider rather than resolving the issue directly with the business.

If the chargeback is accepted, the payment can be reversed — meaning the business can potentially lose the sale, the product AND the postage.

And this is becoming a real concern for online small businesses, particularly when selling internationally.

Australian payment data shows card-not-present fraud is a significant problem, with hundreds of millions of dollars in fraud occurring through online transactions each year.

That doesn’t mean every chargeback is fraudulent. A customer can legitimately dispute a transaction if, for example, goods weren’t received or weren’t as described.

But businesses can also face disputes where they believe the transaction was legitimate.

For small businesses, especially those selling higher-value products such as crystals, this can be incredibly costly.

💎 If you sell online, protect yourself.

Keep records of:
• The customer’s order
• Payment and transaction details
• Tracking information
• Proof of delivery
• Product descriptions and photographs
• Customer communications
• Your terms and conditions

And remember — an international sale carries additional risk simply because the transaction is happening remotely.

Chargebacks aren’t something small businesses should ignore.

They’re a legitimate part of the payment system — but they can have a very real financial impact on a small business.

🌙🖤 Melbourne Road Trip Business Feature #16 – Euphemia Blackthorne

It was cold.

It was raining.

And the air had that beautiful frosty Daylesford chill when I arrived at Euphemia Blackthorne.

I walked through the doors and immediately heard a reading taking place at the table in the centre of the shop.

And honestly...

It was like listening to a confessional.

You know you shouldn’t listen.

You know the message isn’t meant for you.

But you absolutely cannot turn away. 😂

So there I was, browsing and quietly listening, completely captivated by the experience unfolding in front of me.

And then there’s the shop itself.

Wow.

The moment you enter, there’s this incredible sense of peace.

I found myself intrigued by every single detail, wandering slowly and taking everything in.

But there’s something else about this place.

This shop has a spirit.
It’s almost as though it is watching you back.

There is something atmospheric, mysterious and incredibly special about it that I can’t quite put into words.

So do yourself a favour.

🖤 Head to Daylesford
🖤 Walk through the doors with an open heart.
🖤 Take your time.
🖤 Get a reading.
🖤 Explore every corner.

Or maybe you’ll get lucky like me...

And spend 15 minutes living vicariously through someone else’s reading while you browse. 😂✨

Another completely unforgettable stop on this Melbourne adventure.
