Here is an excerpt from a (mostly) O70s PJ report on the trip to Malta and Sicily in June 2026:

A unique feature and the highlight of this year’s tour was the five day visit to eastern Sicily hosted by John and Ronda Granata and John’s cousin Mario who lives in Milan. John was born in Acireale, a city on the east coast of Sicily. The culmination of this Sicily visit was an extraordinary day on Sunday June 14th with a visit to Siracusa and a tour of Ortigia, Greek theatre and a game of cricket against a combined Siracusa side of expats from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Siracua XI 3 for 214 (S Byfield 1-30) def. Port Jackson Tourists 2 for 168.( J Kirk 22 ret, B Bacon28 ret, H Weir 28 ret., Mario 2 no.)

Everyone batted and bowled in this match. Mario made up our XI and played his first ever game of cricket. John Granata opened the batting and the bowling in his first game of cricket on his “home” soil.

The multicultural nature of cricket was in full display with conversations in English, Italian, Sinhalese and Bengali. Truly a unique and unforgettable cricketing experience.
