Skulls represent the skull of Adam, according to ancient Orthodox Christian tradition ☦️

Christ was crucified at Golgotha, “the Place of the Skull”, and His Precious Blood flowed down upon Adam’s skull, revealing that the New Adam had come to redeem the first Adam, and through him, all of humanity.

The skull is therefore not a symbol of death’s victory, but of death’s defeat.

It reminds us of the words:

“Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.”

This is why a skull can appear beneath the Cross in Orthodox iconography and why it serves as a profound reminder in prayer.

It calls us to remember our mortality, to repent while there is time, and to place our hope not in this passing life, but in the Resurrection.
