Youโ€™re managing. But at what cost?

Youโ€™re still showing up.

Still doing the work. Still meeting the deadlines. Still being the person everyone can rely on.

Which makes it very easy to tell yourself youโ€™re fine.

But there are other ways to measure how youโ€™re doing.

The things you cancel because youโ€™re too exhausted.

Being physically present with the people you love and mentally somewhere else.

The friendships that have quietly contracted to the people who need the least from you.

The resentment underneath being endlessly reliable.

The amount of energy you spend checking, anticipating, managing and making sure nothing goes wrong.

The moments you catch a glimpse of who you used to be and wonder where she went.

This is the part of high-functioning burnout we donโ€™t talk about enough.

The invisible cost of holding it all together.

Episode 16 of Unapologetic Edge is about making that cost visible.

Because youโ€™ve already proved you can keep managing.

The more important question might be whether you still want to.

There is a very different conversation available when an old pattern appears.

Instead of:

โ€œWhy am I doing this again?โ€

โ€œWhat is wrong with me?โ€

โ€œI should be over this by now.โ€

It can sound more like:

I know what you're doing.
I know why you learned this.
I'm here now.
I've got this.
You don't have to work this hard anymore.

That's where actual change begins.

Because a nervous system pattern wasn't created through logic.

You can't simply argue it out of existence with better thoughts.

The work has to reach the nervous system at the level where the pattern actually lives.

Standard time-off doesn't work because true recovery requires 7 distinct types of biological and physiological rest: ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ผ

Physical rest: Passive rest like deep sleep, or active rest like gentle somatic movement to discharge stored stress and counter adrenal fatigue. ๐Ÿ’ค

Mental rest: Taking intentional micro-breaks every two hours to step away from compliance pressure, allowing your cognitive brain to power down. ๐Ÿ“‰

Sensory rest: Disconnecting from computer screens, bright office lights, and the constant digital noise of workplace communication that triggers overstimulation. ๐Ÿ”Œ

Emotional rest: Creating a safe space to express true feelings rather than constantly absorbing team pressure or putting on a brave face for the board. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Social rest: Minimizing draining professional politics and surrounding yourself with supportive peers who do not require you to hold the room or manage conflict. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Creative rest: Experiencing natural environments outside the office to re-engage your brain's problem-solving centers without a strict deadline attached. ๐ŸŒฟ

Spiritual rest: Connecting to a deeper sense of purpose and organizational care that goes beyond meeting basic Australian WHS psychosocial compliance checkboxes. โœจ

When navigating complex dynamics like workplace neurodivergence or perimenopause, your autonomic nervous system needs targeted support to maintain high performance. A simple weekend on the couch will not fix systemic depletion. ๐Ÿ›‘

Understanding where a pattern came from doesn't magically make it disappear.

I think it's important to say that.

What understanding can do is change your relationship with the pattern.

Take people pleasing.

If you experience it as something weak, frustrating or fundamentally wrong with you, every time it happens there's another layer added:

Judgement.

Shame.

โ€œWhy am I still doing this?โ€

But when you understand that your nervous system may have learned that managing other people's emotions was the safest thing to do, the pattern starts telling you something.

My nervous system has detected something that feels familiar.

That's information.

And suddenly there's something very different available to you than another battle with yourself.

Are you the person who always knows when the mood in the room has changed?

You notice the tiny shift in someone's voice.

You know who's uncomfortable before they say anything.

You anticipate what people need.

You can sense tension before anyone else seems to have noticed it.

That can look like emotional intelligence.

And sometimes, underneath it, is a nervous system that learned very young that reading the room was part of staying safe.

When good moments could become bad moments without warning, staying alert made sense.

Relaxing didn't.

So you became extraordinarily good at scanning.

The problem is that decades later, your nervous system may still believe it's your job to monitor the environment, even when you're finally somewhere safe enough to stop.

If needing something led to withdrawal or irritation, you learned to need less.

If performing well brought love or approval, you learned to perform.

If conflict felt dangerous, you learned to keep the peace.

You didn't sit down one day and choose these things.

Your nervous system learned them through repeated experience.

And at the time, they made sense.

They were intelligent adaptations to the conditions you were actually living in.

The problem comes years later when the conditions have changed and the nervous system is still running the same programme.

It's a little like buying an iPhone 17 and installing Nokia 3110 software.

There's nothing wrong with the hardware.

The operating system needs an update.

I burned out.

So I rebuilt.

Different job. Different circumstances. Different life.

And then I burned out again.

Eventually I had to sit with a fairly uncomfortable realisation:

The external circumstances were completely different.
The internal pattern was identical.

I'd changed so much around me, yet something had travelled with me into every new version of my life.

That was the point where I stopped looking only at the job, the relationship or the workload and became curious about what was happening inside me.

And that changed everything.

If you've ever left the thing you thought was causing your exhaustion, rebuilt your life, and somehow found yourself back in a strangely familiar place, this episode is for you.

Patterns don't appear from nowhere.

They're learned by a nervous system trying to solve a problem.

And when you were young, you didn't have the options you have now.

You couldn't reason your way through what was happening. You couldn't necessarily leave, set a boundary, explain what you needed or understand the adults around you.

You had a nervous system that was extraordinarily good at learning.

It noticed what created safety.
What maintained connection.
What earned approval.
What reduced conflict.
What helped you belong.

And it adapted.

Some of the patterns you're trying desperately to change today may make far more sense when you understand the problem they were originally solving.

What if the pattern you've spent years trying to get rid of was once the thing your nervous system believed would keep you safe?

That changes how we understand so much.

The overachieving.
The people pleasing.
The inability to stop.
The need to stay useful, productive or in control.

If your nervous system associated a pattern with survival, it isn't going to release it simply because you've decided you don't want to live this way anymore.

From its perspective, letting go could be dangerous.

The pattern wasn't your enemy.

๐—œ๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป.

And the work is helping your nervous system learn that you no longer need that solution to survive.
