Agnew Set To Build Success On Tradies Day (Taree Friday)

Port Macquarie trainer Robert Agnew has high hopes of getting among the winners late in the day with Show ‘Em Howl ($2.90 fav on TAB) and Dirty Does It ($4.80) at the big Hopkins Livermore Cup and Tradies Day meeting at Taree on Friday.

Show ‘Em Howl will contest the Hopkins Livermore Cup, which is race seven over 1400 metres, and Dirty Does It goes around in race eight, the Tanks 2GO Class 1 Handicap over 1000.

Agnew warned each horse would need luck in running because they would likely be coming from back in the field, but that if they got an even share they were good enough to do the rest.

“Both horses should run well, they’re both ready to win,” Agnew said.

“Each of them is the best horse in his race, I think, but just needs a bit of luck. I like their chances, so I’m going there optimistic.”

Both horses will be ridden by talented apprentice jockey Anna Roper, who was aboard Show ‘Em Howl in all four of his career wins - three at Port Macquarie and one at Taree.

The best day for the Agnew, Show ‘Em Howl and Roper combination was at Port on February 22 of this year, when Show ‘Em Howl came from well back and wide on the turn to win the MNC Country Championships Qualifier over 1200 metres.

Show ‘Em Howl has won over distances ranging from 1000 metres to 1500 and the 1400 at Taree shapes up as perfect for him at this stage of his preparation.

The five-year-old gelding has had two runs back from a spell and has run on nicely from back in the field each time for sixths in a Class 6 event over 1175 metres at Grafton and a Benchmark 72 event over 1300 on the Kensington track at Randwick.

“The 1400 is definitely good for him and if there’s enough tempo in the race I believe he’ll win,” Agnew said. “He’ll be midfield or a little bit worse and will be getting home well.

“He got the 1500 because he beat up on a few B-graders that day. The 1200 to 1400 is right in his range.”

Four-year-old gelding Dirty Does It loomed up in a Country Class 1 event over 1206 metres on his home track at his most recent start, but couldn’t quite get past I Am Steffi and finished a close second.

“I don’t think he gets a strong 1200, so he’s dropping back to the 1000 here and that should be ideal for him,” Agnew said.

“Dirty Does It will get back a bit over the 1000 and Show ‘Em Howl, he always has to get back because when he’s ridden forward he doesn’t finish off as well, so they’re going to need luck. But they’re primed to run well.”

Tony Ball, Lyndall Olson and Alicia Willick-McDonald will be representing the local Taree trainers in the Hopkins Livermore Cup, with four runners between them.

The Olson stable’s Zaru ($6.50) is clearly the most preferred among that quartet in the betting.

The now nine-year-old gelding still has a zest for racing as displayed at his most recent start when he ran on well for second over 1280 metres in a Benchmark 87 event at Muswellbrook on July 26.

And he has a distinct liking for his home track at Taree, where he has scored four of his six career wins and also run 12 minor placings.

Ball has Run Rory Run ($34) and Xtra Approval ($26), while Willick-McDonald’s runner is Pick Up The Tab ($34).

Robbie really wanted to sign off the season with a win for the locals but it wasn’t to be.

Port Macquarie has really fired up in 2025-26 and the competition couldn’t be stronger. The investment is coming as owners see the advantages of training thoroughbreds on the mid north coast. Why wouldn’t you!

We were so incredibly lucky to have the jump on the market as the Port community rallied behind our growing stable. It may have taken a while to take shape but with a strong foundation we will be here for many years to come.
