Itโs one of the first rules every scuba diver learns: never hold your breath underwater. Most divers remember the rule, but far fewer understand just how important it is. Even holding your breath for a few seconds while ascending can cause a serious injury.
The reason comes down to one of the basic laws of physics.
As you descend, the increasing water pressure compresses the air in your lungs. Your regulator automatically supplies air at the same pressure as the surrounding water, allowing you to breathe normally regardless of your depth.
As you ascend, the opposite happens. The surrounding pressure decreases, causing the air in your lungs to expand. If you continue breathing normally, that expanding air simply leaves your body as you exhale.

If you hold your breath while ascending, the expanding air has nowhere to go. As the pressure decreases, the air trapped inside your lungs continues to expand, increasing the pressure within the lungs themselves.
Your lungs are flexible, but they can only stretch so far. If the expanding air cannot escape, it can rupture the tiny air sacs inside the lungs. This injury is known as pulmonary barotrauma.
In severe cases, air can escape into the bloodstream and travel to the brain or heart, causing an arterial gas embolism (AGE). Although uncommon, it is one of the most serious injuries a diver can experience and requires immediate medical treatment.
What surprises many divers is that this doesn't require a deep dive. Because the greatest relative pressure change occurs close to the surface, even ascending a metre or two while holding your breath can be enough to cause injury.

Continuous breathing does more than protect your lungs. Slow, relaxed breathing helps you control your buoyancy, maintain a calm state of mind, and avoid the temptation to rush your ascent.
If you ever find yourself feeling anxious underwater, focus on breathing slowly and continuously. It not only keeps your lungs safe but also helps your body and mind stay relaxed while you deal with the situation.

You should never hold your breath while scuba diving because the air in your lungs expands as you ascend. If that expanding air can't escape, it can seriously damage your lungs and, in rare cases, lead to a life-threatening arterial gas embolism. The safest habit in diving is also one of the simplest: keep breathing, ascend slowly, and let the expanding air leave your lungs naturally.

Today we headed out on Stacey Jay for some team building time and a search for some new cray spots๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ
We found two new sites that we named โ Paulโs Plungeโ and โMeganโs Manorโ
Both sites had a heap of crays with tar spot, so back when the crays are running to fill our bags !!!

Every diver learns to equalise their ears during descent, but one of the most common mistakes is waiting until discomfort begins. By the time you feel pressure or pain, equalising has already become much more difficult. The secret isn't learning a better technique. It's learning to equalise before you need to.
As you descend, the pressure around you increases. Your middle ear is an air-filled space separated from the surrounding water by your eardrum. To keep the pressure equal on both sides, air must pass through the Eustachian tubes into the middle ear.
When you equalise early and often, only a small pressure difference exists. The Eustachian tubes open easily, allowing air to flow into the middle ear with very little effort.

If you continue descending without equalising, the surrounding water pressure pushes your eardrum further inward. At the same time, the tissues around the Eustachian tubes begin to compress and swell slightly, making the tubes narrower and more difficult to open.
The greater the pressure difference becomes, the more force is required to equalise. Ironically, the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to achieve the very thing you're trying to do.
Many divers respond by blowing harder. Unfortunately, forcing an equalisation rarely helps and can actually make the situation worse. Excessive force can injure the delicate structures of the middle or inner ear, leading to pain, dizziness, hearing loss, or an ear barotrauma.

The best approach is to equalise before you feel any discomfort. Many experienced divers begin equalising the moment they start descending and continue every metre or so throughout the descent.
If one ear doesn't clear easily, stop descending immediately. Ascend a metre or two until the pressure eases, then try again gently. Never continue descending through ear pain. Pain is your body's warning that the pressure difference has become too great.
It's also important to descend slowly and maintain good control of your buoyancy so you have time to equalise comfortably without feeling rushed.

Equalisation becomes harder if you wait because increasing pressure pushes your eardrum inward and narrows the Eustachian tubes, making them more difficult to open. Early, gentle, and frequent equalisation is far easier than trying to catch up later. One of the simplest habits in diving is also one of the best ways to protect your ears and make every descent comfortable and enjoyable.
