Why does swelling happen during pregnancy?

If you've noticed your rings don't fit anymore or your ankles seem to disappear by the end of the day—you're definitely not alone.
Swelling (also called oedema) is incredibly common during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester.

Here's why:

💙 1. Your blood volume increases
During pregnancy, your blood volume increases by around 40–50% to support both you and your growing baby.
More fluid circulating means it's easier for some of it to collect in your feet, ankles and hands.

💙 2. Your body naturally retains more fluid
Hormones encourage your body to hold onto extra water to support pregnancy and prepare for birth.

💙 3. Hormones relax your blood vessels
Pregnancy hormones cause your blood vessels to relax, making it easier for fluid to move into surrounding tissues.

💙 4. Your growing uterus puts pressure on your veins
As your baby grows, your uterus can reduce blood flow returning from your legs.
This makes swelling in the feet and ankles much more noticeable—especially after standing for long periods.

⚠️ When swelling isn't normal

Seek urgent medical advice if swelling is:
• Sudden or severe
• Mainly affecting your face or hands
• Accompanied by headaches
• Associated with blurred vision
• Associated with upper abdominal pain
• Accompanied by shortness of breath

These symptoms can sometimes indicate conditions that need prompt assessment.
Always contact your healthcare provider if you're unsure.

When people hear "pelvic floor", they often think of Kegels.

But your pelvic floor does so much more than help prevent leaks.

Understanding how it works can help you exercise with more confidence during and after pregnancy.

Exercise during pregnancy shouldn't leave you exhausted for days afterwards.

Your body gives you feedback.

Learning to listen to it is one of the best skills you can develop.

Pregnancy isn't about pushing harder.

It's about training smarter.

💬 Which one surprised you most?

Growing a baby definitely increases your nutritional needs—but it doesn't mean you need to double your meals.

Think of pregnancy nutrition as fueling your body well, rather than just eating more.

I’m 32 weeks pregnant and walking upstairs feels like cardio…” 😅

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:
“I’m getting unfit because I’m so breathless.”

In many cases, your body is actually working harder than ever:
✨ Blood volume increases
✨ Your heart pumps more blood
✨ Your diaphragm has less room
✨ Oxygen demands increase

So yes… feeling puffed during pregnancy can be completely normal.

Swipe through to understand why 🤍
Save this for later or send it to a pregnant friend.
