Jason Beechey is the Head of Dance at the Zurich University of the Arts. Appointed in 2024, this follows 18 years as Rector of the Palucca University of Dance Dresden and having created the D.A.N.C.E. There’s been a lot of conversation about whether dance competitions are good for dancers.

We believe they absolutely can be.

Healthy competition challenges dancers to grow.

It gives them something to work towards. It teaches discipline, commitment, resilience and how to perform under pressure. It encourages dancers to push beyond what they thought they could achieve and gives them the opportunity to receive valuable feedback from experienced industry professionals.

It also teaches some incredibly important life lessons.

How to handle nerves.
How to accept feedback.
How to celebrate someone else’s success.
How to deal with disappointment.
How to get back up and try again.

And perhaps most importantly, competition teaches dancers that success isn’t always about coming first.

Sometimes success is walking onto a stage when you’re terrified.

Sometimes it’s finally nailing the skill you’ve been working on for months.

Sometimes it’s performing with more confidence than you’ve ever had before.

And sometimes it’s simply walking away thinking:

“I did my best.”

Of course, competition needs to be conducted in a positive, supportive and age-appropriate environment. Dancers should never be made to feel that their result defines their talent or their worth.

This is exactly why, at The Aus Prix our mission has always been about providing opportunities — not just medals and places.

Through scholarships, workshops, masterclasses and unique dance experiences. We want to create opportunities that can genuinely help shape a dancer’s future.

And in just two years, we’ve seen that mission come to life. We couldn’t be more proud of what we have created.

We’ve watched dancers go on to experience dance training at national and international schools, receive scholarships and gain opportunities they may never have otherwise had. More importantly many of these dancers didn’t necessarily place first, second or third. They were recognised by our adjudicators and workshop facilitators for something beyond a competition result — perhaps their potential, work ethic, artistry, determination or musicality.
