What’s the wildest piece of mental health content you’ve come across?
Because at this point, “according to psychology” is doing a lot of unpaid labour.
I’m pretty passionate about fighting this wave of misinformation … with better information!
Psychologists unite.

mental health misinformation, therapy language, pop psychology, trauma response, attachment style, nervous system regulation, psychology, psychologist reacts

Not sure why, but I am hearing this way too often.
The last five coaching clients I’ve had all had this challenge, and all wanted to try coaching as a result.
No, I don’t think coaching is the be-all, but if your concerns aren’t clinical in nature, and you’re not getting what what you need in the therapeutic space, this might be the page for you 🤷‍♂️

Truthfully, it’s not just content creators. Content creations the form performance and for the last eight years, I’ve been working with first responders in high-performance situations.
As I started this content journey, I noticed how many tricks I use with myself that my clients use on the daily.
This content thing is hard enough, let alone without battling yourself.
My hope is I can make it a little easier for some 🤷‍♂️

I feel like there’s this misconception about inner work …
It’s not done in the therapy room.
It’s done out in the real world on the daily.
Therapy or coaching is planning, living is the work.

Other than the fact that there’s an interesting debate about how much Maslow’s time with the Blackfoot Nation influenced his thinking, most of us were never fully taught Maslow’s hierarchy.
In his later work, Maslow became increasingly interested in self-transcendence: the idea that human development may not end with fulfilling your own potential, but with moving beyond the self.
Serving something larger. Serving others. Creating meaning. Pursuing spirituality, knowledge, a cause, or leaving something behind that isn’t entirely about you.
Ironically, self-actualisation became the famous part. Maslow’s work was heavily popularised through management and business, and for the better part of 60 years we’ve been striving to “reach our potential.” (Academy of Management Journals)
I can’t help but wonder: if self-transcendence had entered the popular zeitgeist instead of self-actualisation, what would our society look like now?

Loss is often difficult not only because something has ended, but because of what remains unresolved.
That is particularly true with ambiguous loss, where the loss itself may be real even when there is no clean ending.
Research on intolerance of uncertainty suggests that the harder we find it to live with not knowing, the more distressing these unresolved states can become. That doesn’t mean acceptance requires liking what happened, approving of it, or finding a satisfying explanation.
Closure is an unreliable target. Sometimes there is no final conversation, explanation, apology, or piece of information that makes everything make sense.
The more useful skill may be learning to carry some unanswered questions without allowing them to keep your life on hold.
