Magpies Mackay & District Obedience Club

Magpies Mackay & District Obedience Club Promote and encourage responsible dog ownership by educating all members in the training, care and welfare of their animals. We teach YOU to train YOUR dog.

Pursue a positive community image by the promotion of all facets of the function and activities of the club. Magpies Mackay and District Obedience Club (MMADOC) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting responsible dog ownership. If you have a puppy or dog you wish to train, then come and join us on Monday evenings at our grounds at the Magpies Sporting Club, Glenella Road, Glenella. You

r membership with the club includes a social membership at Magpies Sporting Club and regular updates to keep you up with what is happening in the club. Our instructors all work on a voluntary basis and have trained dogs. Individual problems can be discussed with your instructor or one of our senior instructors before or after classes. Your instructor may not have all of the answers, but collectively, the instructor team has many of the answers. Your instructor will show you how to train your dog. It is not their role to teach your dog, as you would not then have the skills to handle or control your pet away from your instructor. It is important to remember that first, your dog learns to learn from you, and the respect and rapport develops as your training expertise improves! This is when dog training gets exciting because you can then teach your dog almost anything. It is our wish for you to be a happy and proud dog owner made possible with obedience training and support you to train kindly but firmly and consistently

Members learn how to achieve an obedient dog which will heel beside them, come when called and stay when told. Training activities are available to suit all dogs of all ages and include OBEDIENCE, AGILITY, JUMPERS, TRACKING, and RALLY. The Magpies Mackay and District Obedience Club is an affiliated club of Dogs Queensland (CCCQ). For more information on Dogs Queensland, you can visit their website on www.cccq.org.au. A full listing of Obedience Clubs affiliated with Dogs Queensland is also available from their website. As an affiliate of the Dogs Queensland, the club conducts official competitions in Obedience, RallyO, Jumpers & Agility, Tracking and Endurance. MMADOC is also one of 10 affiliated clubs of the Magpies Sporting Club in Mackay and you can visit their site at: www.magpiesmackay.com.au. Our club is also involved in events in the promotion of responsible dog ownership.

Interesting research!

New research! ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Excited to see new research from Jade of Animal Behaviour Matters out this week! These two studies were undertaken with the Scent Detection Research Group at the The University of Waikato in New Zealand.

๐Ÿฆด Dogs were given breakfast before or after completing a scent-detection task.

โŒ When working prior to eating, dogs made significantly more false alarms.

๐Ÿบ Being hungry may cause a mild increase in frustration-related behaviour during scent work for some dogs.

๐Ÿ• Dogโ€™s hunger state can influence both scent-detection performance and behaviour.

Yee et al. (2026) found that dogs working before breakfast produced more false alarms, suggesting hunger may increase dogs' tendency to respond to non-target odours.

Fountain et al. (2026) found that unfed dogs showed more whining and interaction with the equipment, indicating mild frustration associated with hunger. However, frustration behaviours were generally infrequent and varied between individual dogs.

Links to both of these open access articles will be in the comments or search them on google scholar/research gate.

The last few weeks, our agility dogs have been busy learning jumps, hoops and tunnels! ๐Ÿพ

Last night, we put it all together and watched them take on a variety of obstacles in a row and they absolutely smashed it! (Some even look proud as punch) ๐ŸŒŸ

Itโ€™s been so much fun watching their confidence grow each week and seeing all the hard work from both dogs and handlers come together. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ช

Well done to everyone involved and a big thank you to our agility trainer Kirsten! ๐Ÿ‘
