🌸 WOMEN, HORMONES & CHANGES IN WHERE WE STORE BODY FAT 🌸

Have you ever wondered why your body seems to change shape as you move through different stages of life?

For women, hormones can have a major influence on where the body tends to store fat. It doesn't mean you've done anything wrongβ€”and it's not simply a matter of calories or exercise. Our bodies naturally change with age, hormones, pregnancy and menopause. πŸ’œ

πŸ‘§ Late teens & early 20s

As oestrogen levels rise through puberty, many women naturally develop a more pear-shaped body, with a greater tendency to store fat around the hips, bum and thighs.

This pattern is influenced by reproductive hormones and genetics and is a normal part of female development. You may sometimes hear that this happens specifically "to attract a mate", but that's an oversimplificationβ€”the biology is much more complex.

πŸ‘© 20s–30s

During the reproductive years, many women continue to carry more subcutaneous fat around the hips, thighs and buttocks.

Lifestyle, genetics, pregnancy, stress, sleep and contraception can all influence body composition too.

🀰 Pregnancy & postpartum

Pregnancy creates enormous hormonal and physical changes.

The body naturally stores additional energy and changes how it distributes fat to support pregnancy and breastfeeding. After having a baby, body composition may change againβ€”and it can take time for your body to settle into its new normal.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ¦° 40s–50s – Perimenopause

As hormones begin to fluctuate, particularly oestrogen, many women notice a change in where they store fat.

You may find that fat is more likely to accumulate around the waist and abdomen, rather than predominantly around the hips and thighs.

Muscle mass can also gradually decline with age, which can affect metabolism and body composition.

🌺 Menopause & beyond

After menopause, lower oestrogen levels are associated with a greater tendency toward central abdominal fat storage.

This is one reason many women say:

"I'm eating the same way I always have, but my body is changing!"

And they're not imagining it. ❀️

But rememberβ€”hormones are only one piece of the puzzle.

Genetics, muscle mass, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress, medications and overall energy balance all contribute to changes in body composition.

πŸ’ͺ What CAN you do?

You can't choose where your body stores or loses fat, but you can support your body through every stage of life:

πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ Strength train regularly
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Keep moving throughout the day
πŸ₯— Eat plenty of protein, vegetables and whole foods
😴 Prioritise good-quality sleep
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated
❀️ Focus on health and strengthβ€”not just the number on the scales

Most importantly, don't compare your body at 45 to the body you had at 25.

Your body isn't failing youβ€”it's changing as you change. 🌸

At Move N Motion, we believe fitness is about feeling strong, capable and confident at every age and stage of life. πŸ’œπŸ’š

Move with purpose. Connect with people. Feel your best.

πŸ’¦β€οΈ AQUA AEROBICS & YOUR AEROBIC HEART RATE! β€οΈπŸ’¦

Did you know you don't have to be a runner or a gym regular to improve your aerobic fitness? Aqua aerobics is a fantastic way to get your heart rate up while the water provides natural resistance and reduces impact on your joints.

πŸ‘ŸπŸ’š EVERY STEP MATTERS! πŸ’œπŸ‘Ÿ

Did you know the right footwear can make a big difference to how comfortable and supported you feel during exercise?

Your feet are your foundation, so choosing a comfortable pair of supportive runnersβ€”such as New Balance or another quality brand that suits your feetβ€”can help provide cushioning, stability and support while you're moving.

✨ Why consider good arch support?

βœ… Helps support your natural foot alignment
βœ… Can improve comfort during walking and exercise
βœ… Helps distribute pressure more evenly across your feet
βœ… Provides extra support during squats, walking, cardio and other movements
βœ… May help reduce foot and lower-limb fatigue

For some people, the standard shoe insole may not provide enough support. An additional arch-support insole may be helpful, particularly if you have specific foot-support needs.

πŸ’‘ Remember: everyone's feet are different! The "best" shoe isn't necessarily the same for everyone. Look for a comfortable, well-fitting runner that provides the support you personally need.

πŸ‘£ Happy feet = happy movement!

At Move N Motion, we want you to feel comfortable, confident and supported while exercising.

Move more. Feel better. Move N Motion. πŸ’œπŸ’š

🧠🦢 Did you know? A simple one-leg balance test can reveal surprisingly much about how your body is coordinating movementβ€”and your ability to do it tends to decline as you get older.

Standing on one leg looks simple, but your brain is constantly combining information from several systems to keep you upright. Your eyes, inner ear, muscles, joints, and nervous system are continuously sending signals about where your body is in space. Your brain then processes all of that information and makes tiny adjustments to keep you balanced.

That's why balance is much more than just having "strong legs." It depends on proprioception, vestibular function, vision, muscle strength, reaction time, and coordination working together.

Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that the ability to stand on one leg is associated with longevity in middle-aged and older adults. Other research has also linked impaired balance and gait with cognitive impairment and dementia risk, although balance testing alone cannot determine whether someone will develop cognitive decline.

And here's the important part: balance is trainable. You don't have to accept worsening stability as an unavoidable part of aging.

πŸ’‘ Try this: Near a sturdy counter or chair, stand on one leg for 10–30 seconds. Once you're comfortable, you can gradually make it harder by reducing your support or briefly closing your eyesβ€”but never practice eyes-closed balance near stairs or without something stable to grab.

If your balance has suddenly become much worse, or you're frequently losing your balance, that's worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
