Six years into painting I enrolled into TAFE to do the Certificate 111 Trade Course in Painting and Decorating which I attended evenings, and finished at Credit level. I just finished a job for a nice couple. The client asked if I could paint the 70s-80s style tiles to blend in with the newly renovated area, including the new flooring.
I said, “Yep, no problem! I can paint them.” However, I then thought I would ask if I could use this opportunity to do a little practice project at no charge, and they said sure.
I used some leftover product I had from called Vertigo.
The main brief, as a newbie, was to create a look that closely resembled the existing sections on the stairs. Plus, Aronne was able to tint his product to Dulux Natural White to match, which was amazing.
I’m very happy my client gave me the opportunity to carry out this little project; I think it turned out really well. In doing so, it has rekindled my passion, and I want to start practicing this work more.

As a sole trader, I’m always trying to improve and do better on each following job compared to the last. As a tradesman, I believe there is always room for improvement, from workmanship to systems in place, and that includes investing in some of the best quality tools on the market to help make the process easier and finishes better.
I’m a little late to the party—actually a few years late 😂—but I finally picked up some cordless tools: the Festool cordless vac in the Systainer style, so I can integrate it into a modular setup, as well as the Graco QuickShot for cordless spraying and a new sander, the Festool RTS 400.
I’m super excited to use all of the new equipment and work out the strengths and any weaknesses they have, but most importantly, I’m focused on finding a new way to work smarter.
