Stay Sun Safe, Queensland! 🌞
Did you know that painful sunburns before age 20 can significantly increase the risk of skin cancers later in life—by 150% for squamous cell carcinomas and 160% for some basal cell carcinomas?
Cancer Council Queensland is urging not-for-profit early learning centres, schools, and community groups to apply for free sun-safe marquees through their Portable Shade Project.
In Queensland, where UV levels are 3+ all year round, sunburn can happen in under 10 minutes! Protecting young people is critical, as UV damage adds up over time.
“UV exposure during the first 18 years of life is the most critical risk factor for skin cancer later in life,” says Sharyn Chin Fat, Cancer Council Queensland’s Head of Prevention and Early Detection.
☀️ Learn more and apply today to keep our community sun safe!
Portable Shade Project
The CCQ Portable Shade Project supplies UPF50+ portable shade structures to NFP organisations catering to children to help prevent exposure to UVR.

Starting in semester 2 of year 10 back in 2022, 17 of Kenmore State High School’s brightest mathematicians took on the challenge of accelerated maths. This means that they started year 11 six months earlier than the rest of the students with the aim of completing a university subject in semester 1 of year 12. This has been a challenging program for these students as they are still required to sit year 12 exams and complete assignments along with the rest of the cohort, whilst at the same time taking on MATH1051 – a University of Queensland subject known to be extremely challenging and considered one of the most difficult to pass subjects at the university.
Today I am excited to announce the brilliant results of the students who took on this demanding but rewarding path. Of the 17 students, 7 of them achieved the highest possible grade of a 7 (high distinction). This means that 41.2% of our students achieved this grade compared to the University of Queensland average of 21%. Nearly double the percentage of our students got the highest grade when compared with the university cohort who are a year older than them and have already completed high school. In addition to this, we had 4 students who achieved a grade of 6 (distinction) and 2 students with a 5 (credit). Our Kenmore students also beat the university’s pass rate by over 12%. These results are outstanding and show the dedication and natural mathematical ability of these 17 exceptional students. Congratulations to these students and we all look forward to seeing you excel in the future.
