Exercise Physiology and Injury Prevention

01/08/2026

One of the quieter things we encourage at Rehab Insight is this: keep your baseline active on weekends.

Not gym sessions. Not structured exercise. Just movement that keeps your nervous system reminded of what it has been learning during the week.

A short walk. Gentle mobility. Time outdoors. These are not extras. They are the connective tissue of a recovery that compounds.

Enjoy your Sunday. And keep moving.

Visit Exercise Physiology Brisbane | Rehab Insight for more on how we build recovery into everyday life.

Fear of movement is one of the most common barriers to recovery and one of the least discussed.

After an injury, especially a painful one, the body learns to protect itself. Movements that were once automatic become hesitant. Daily tasks feel like risks. The world starts to shrink.

This is not weakness. It is a normal response to a real threat. But it can become its own problem.

What breaks the cycle is graded exposure. Carefully structured movement that gradually expands what your body trusts itself to do.

At Rehab Insight, rebuilding confidence is as important to us as rebuilding strength.

We want to hear from you this week.

Which part of your body has felt most affected?

A. Lower back or hips
B. Neck and shoulders
C. Knees or legs
D. Fatigue or mental load

This is for general awareness only. A proper clinical assessment is always the right approach for your specific situation.

But if any of this resonated, if you have been following along and thinking "this sounds like me," we want you to know that a proper assessment and a structured plan can genuinely change things.

There is a conversation happening across Australian healthcare right now about GLP-1 medications, and most of it is focused on how much weight people are losing.

What it is not focused on enough is what kind of weight is being lost.

Without structured progressive resistance exercise running alongside GLP-1 treatment, a significant portion of the weight lost is lean muscle mass rather than fat. Estimates in the research literature range from 25 to 40 percent of total weight loss being lean mass in sedentary individuals.

This is not a minor side effect. Loss of muscle mass reduces resting metabolic rate, making long-term weight maintenance harder. It reduces functional capacity and increases injury risk. It accelerates age-related decline in independence. And for older adults, it significantly increases falls risk.

The clinical solution is straightforward. A progressive resistance training program prescribed and supervised by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, running concurrently with the medication, preserves lean mass and drives the metabolic adaptations that make treatment outcomes sustainable.

This is the component that determines whether GLP-1 treatment produces a genuinely sustainable health outcome or simply a temporary number on a scale.

At Rehab Insight, we provide exactly this. Visit Exercise Physiology Brisbane | Rehab Insight or call 0431 541 687.

That moment your EP says, "Alright, let's try something different today," and you instantly think, "Yeah... nah." đŸ˜‚

Good news. It's probably not as scary as the look on your face.

One rep at a time. We've got your back. You're always IN!!

Myth: Rehab should hurt to work.

Truth: This belief keeps more people stuck than almost any other.

At Rehab Insight, we work within the therapeutic window. The range of load that is sufficient to drive adaptation without provoking aggravation. Too little produces no change. Too much produces setback and a reinforced fear of movement.

When a client reports sharp or worsening pain during an exercise, that is clinical feedback. We adjust. We do not celebrate it.

The goal is precision, not intensity. And that precision is what builds capacity that lasts.

Depression is associated with elevated inflammatory markers and measurable reductions in muscle mass.

Anxiety produces sustained sympathetic activation that increases muscle tension and amplifies pain sensitivity.

Burnout dysregulates the stress hormone system in ways that directly impair tissue healing.

These are not metaphors. These are physiological mechanisms with clinical consequences.

At Rehab Insight, we treat mental and physical health as a single system because that is what they are. Our programs span WorkCover mental health claims and NDIS plans.

If you are managing a mental health condition alongside physical symptoms and have not received care that addresses both, we would like to speak with you.

Recovery requires energy. And energy requires care.

Sleep, nutrition, social connection, and moments of genuine rest are not distractions from your rehabilitation. They are inputs that determine how well your body and nervous system can respond to the work you are putting in.

If you have been running on empty and wondering why progress feels slow, this is worth paying attention to.

We see the whole person at Rehab Insight, not just the painful part.

You know your body better than you did at the start. You have more clinical information. You understand the patterns now.

And you have evidence, even if it is not visible yet, that your system is capable of adapting.

Flare-ups are part of the process, not proof that it has failed.

At Rehab Insight, we help you interpret what a difficult week actually means and keep moving forward with a program built to absorb those moments.

This question matters more than it might seem.

Recovery means something different for every person we see. For some it means returning to a physically demanding job at full capacity. For others it means playing with their kids without pain. For others still, it means sleeping through the night, managing their condition independently, or simply not thinking about their body every hour of the day.

We build every program at Rehab Insight around your definition, not a generic outcome.

So we want to ask: when you imagine being recovered, what does that look like for you?

Share in the comments. And if you are ready to start building toward it, visit Exercise Physiology Brisbane | Rehab Insight or message us for a free consultation.
