Supporting the next generation of GPs 👨‍⚕️

Since 2013, I've been a GP supervisor, supporting doctors in training as they build their skills, confidence and careers in general practice.

For me, supporting the next generation of doctors is about more than clinical knowledge. It’s about mentoring, sharing experience, challenging thinking and helping emerging GPs discover their own potential.

Proud to be supporting the future of Australian healthcare.

Part 2 looks at how a slowing metabolic rate can show up in everyday life, like eating the same way you did years ago, but gaining weight more easily.

And when the body becomes metabolically dysfunctional, the joints may feel the impact too.

Metabolism, inflammation, and joint health are more connected than many people realise.

Have you noticed changes in your metabolism over time? Comment below and follow for Part 3.

What if osteoarthritis isn’t just “wear and tear”?

In Part 1, we look at how senescent cells, inflammation, and metabolic control may play a role in joint health and early disease.

Osteoarthritis has often been explained like a hinge slowly wearing down, but the science is much more complex.

Could inflammation and metabolism be the missing pieces in how we understand joint ageing?

Comment your thoughts below and follow for Part 2.

What can you actually do for your joint health right now?

In the final part of this series, we bring it back to the foundations.

When it comes to osteoarthritis and joint health, the first step is getting your body into the best shape possible: eating well, exercising sensibly, sleeping properly, and supporting your metabolism.

But if joint pain, swelling, or stiffness is severe or persistent, it may be time to investigate further.

X-rays, MRI scans, and blood tests can help identify what is really going on, and whether osteoarthritis or another type of arthritis may be involved.

The key message? Don’t ignore your joints. Look after the foundations, listen to your body, and consider speaking with a doctor experienced in managing joint problems.

What is one thing you do to look after your joints? Comment below.

What is metabolic flexibility, and why does it matter for healthy aging? ⚡

Your body works best when it can switch between different fuel sources depending on what it needs. This ability is known as metabolic flexibility.
When that flexibility is lost, the body relies on a single way of producing energy, which may impact overall health over time.

This is Part 4 of our series. Follow along as we continue exploring the science behind metabolism, longevity, and healthy aging.

Have you heard of metabolic flexibility before?

What if GLP-1 medications could support your joints in more ways than one? 🧐

Did you know that GLP-1 receptors are found in many organs throughout the body, including tissues involved in joint health?
Emerging research suggests these medications may help support the metabolic function of cartilage cells, the tissue that cushions our joints. While the science is still evolving, it's opening up exciting new conversations around osteoarthritis and healthy ageing.

This is Part 3 of our series. Follow along, there's more to come ❗️

What are your thoughts on the future of GLP-1 medications beyond weight loss?

What if osteoarthritis isn't just "wear and tear"?
For years, active people, especially older runners, have been told to slow down to "protect" their joints.
But emerging science is changing the conversation.

Osteoarthritis is now being understood as more complex, with inflammation playing a much bigger role than we once thought.
And now, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro are showing early signals that they may have a role in osteoarthritis research too.

This is only Part 1, follow along for the full series.
What do you think: is it time we rethink joint health and ageing?

Is it just weight loss, or is something else happening?

We know that carrying excess weight places extra stress on our joints, with every extra kilogram adding around 4 kg of force on the knees.
But with GLP-1 drugs like Semaglutide, scientists are seeing joint improvements that go way beyond what weight loss alone can explain.
Could reducing this mechanical load be one reason some people experience improvements in joint health?

It turns out those GLP-1 receptors aren't just in your gut…
Follow along for Part 3, where we explore whether there's more to the story than weight loss alone.

Have you noticed a difference in your joint health after losing weight?

Two night shifts a week. Is it quietly wrecking your health?
Short answer: not necessarily. The real issue isn't the shifts themselves, it's what they do to your body's natural clock, again and again.

The good news? A few small, practical shifts can make a real difference to your energy, sleep and long-term health.
