⚠️ DON’T WAIT FOR THE FIRST PUNCH TO REALISE YOU’RE IN DANGER.

A recent Sunshine Coast court report involving serious allegations of domestic violence is a reminder of something important:

Violence doesn’t always begin with the first physical attack. It can escalate over time.

Self-defence isn’t only about what you do after somebody becomes violent. It’s also about recognising when a situation is changing and acting early.

Warning signs can include increasing aggression, threats or intimidation, controlling behaviour, deliberately damaging or taking your property, preventing you from leaving, following you when you try to disengage, or invading your personal space.

None of these means you should wait around to see whether the situation becomes physical.

👀 RECOGNISE — notice changes in behaviour.
↔️ CREATE DISTANCE — don't unnecessarily remain within reach.
🚪 MOVE TOWARD SAFETY — identify somewhere you can safely go.
🗣️ COMMUNICATE — tell someone you trust what is happening.
📞 GET HELP — don't wait for violence to become more serious.
🛡️ DEFEND IF NECESSARY — if you face an immediate threat and cannot safely disengage.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL SOMEONE HITS YOU TO TAKE YOUR SAFETY SERIOUSLY.

At United Krav Maga–IKMF, we teach practical self-defence, situational awareness and decision-making under pressure.

The goal isn’t to make people more willing to fight.

It’s to help people recognise danger earlier, make better decisions and have practical options when avoidance is no longer possible.

🚨 PROPERTY CAN BE REPLACED. PEOPLE CAN’T.

A recent report from Sippy Downs is a good reminder that what begins as a relatively minor property offence can potentially turn into something much more serious if a confrontation occurs.

Two people wearing black hoodies were reportedly captured on video allegedly taking a box of drinks from a local takeaway on 14 September.

It raises an important self-defense question:

IF YOU SEE SOMEONE STEALING — SHOULD YOU CONFRONT THEM?

Before stepping in, consider what you don't know.

⚠️ Are they carrying a weapon?
⚠️ Is someone else waiting nearby?
⚠️ Are they affected by drugs or alcohol?
⚠️ How will they react when challenged?
⚠️ Is recovering the property worth risking somebody being injured?

We've recently seen a very relevant example here on the Sunshine Coast.

In a separate incident at Nambour, police allege two supermarket staff approached a man before he produced a knife and threatened them.

Thankfully, neither staff member was physically injured.

The lesson isn't to ignore crime.

It's to think before turning a property incident into a physical confrontation.

👀 OBSERVE — from a safe position.
↔️ KEEP DISTANCE — don't unnecessarily close the gap.
👨‍👩‍👧 PROTECT PEOPLE FIRST — move others away from danger.
📱 GATHER INFORMATION SAFELY — descriptions, direction of travel or CCTV may assist police.
📞 GET HELP — contact police or security when appropriate.
🛡️ DEFEND IF NECESSARY — if you or someone else faces an immediate threat and safe disengagement isn't possible.

At United Krav Maga–IKMF, self-defence isn't about proving how tough you are.

It's about recognising danger, making good decisions under pressure and knowing when to disengage.

Sometimes the smartest self-defence decision you can make is deciding that the property simply isn't worth the fight.

Practical self-defence is a skill that can be learned.

🚨 SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ARE HERE — DOES YOUR FAMILY HAVE A SAFETY PLAN?

Queensland's school holidays are underway, which means more young people are out with friends, visiting shopping centres, beaches and events, using public transport and spending more time away from parents.

At the same time, Queensland Police have commenced Operation Yankee Spring Break, running from 19 September to 9 October, with increased police activity on Queensland roads throughout the holiday period.

For us, it's a timely reminder that personal safety isn't only about knowing how to fight.

It's about knowing what to do before a situation becomes dangerous.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT A SIMPLE SAFETY PLAN

📱 STAY CONNECTED
Make sure someone knows where you're going, who you're with and approximately when you'll be home.

👀 NOTICE YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Look up from the phone occasionally. Pay attention to who's around you and what's happening.

↔️ CREATE DISTANCE EARLY
If someone is behaving aggressively, unpredictably or making you uncomfortable, you don't need to wait for something to happen before moving away.

💡 MOVE TOWARD SAFETY
If something doesn't feel right, move toward populated, well-lit areas, shops, security, police or other trusted adults.

🚫 DON'T GET DRAWN INTO OTHER PEOPLE'S TROUBLE
Arguments and group confrontations can escalate quickly. Walking away isn't weakness—sometimes it's the smartest decision available.

📍 HAVE A MEETING POINT
At shopping centres, beaches, festivals or other busy locations, agree beforehand where everyone should meet if separated.

🌐 BE CAREFUL WITH ONLINE CONTACTS
Young people should be extremely cautious about meeting someone they've only communicated with online. Parents or another trusted adult should know what's happening.

📞 GET HELP EARLY
If you're genuinely in danger, don't wait for the situation to get worse before seeking help.

A simple rule for young people to remember:

👀 NOTICE → 🏃 MOVE → 📱 COMMUNICATE → 🆘 GET HELP

At United Krav Maga–IKMF, we believe practical self-defence starts long before somebody throws the first punch.

We teach people to recognise danger, make decisions under pressure, create distance, protect themselves and others, and develop physical skills for situations they couldn't safely avoid.

The objective isn't to win a fight.

The objective is to recognise the problem early enough that you don't have to be in one.

🥊 TRAIN SMART. STAY AWARE. PROTECT WHAT MATTERS MOST.

Practical self-defence is a skill that can be learned.
