No sport encapsulates the American dream more than baseball.
A game for players of all shapes and sizes, baseball’s enduring appeal is that anyone can succeed on the diamond if they knuckle down and work hard enough.
Australia’s Travis Bazzana is living out that dream right now. The 23-year-old from Sydney’s northern suburbs is only halfway through his rookie season in Major League Baseball but is already knocking it out of the park.
Playing second base for the Cleveland Guardians, the left-handed Bazzana has already crushed seven home runs from just 63 games to earn selection in the annual All-Star Game in Philadelphia this week.
Only three other Aussies have ever been picked for the Midsummer Classic but none as quickly as Bazzana, whose lifelong goal of playing in the majors didn’t include becoming an All-Star right off the bat.
But anyone who has followed Bazzana’s rapidly rising career won’t be completely shocked because he’s long been a star in the making.
