Infernos are getting ready for another exciting basketball season, and we’d love to welcome our players and families back for 2026/2027!
Whether you’re a returning Infernos player, looking for a new club, new to Albany or just starting your basketball journey, now is the time to register your interest.

Albany Basketball Association Important Information With the 2025/2026 basketball season fast approaching, the Albany Basketball Association would like to share some important updates with our community.

🏀 What is a Double Age Group in Basketball?🏀

In Basketball WA competitions, a double age group means players born across two consecutive calendar years are grouped into one division. For example:

Under 14s (U14) includes players born in 2013 and 2014

Under 16s (U16) includes players born in 2011 and 2012

* This system is used for domestic competitions, Country Champs, State Champs, and development pathways such as FDP, SDP, and State teams.

Why Are Age Groups Based on Year of Birth?

* Basketball WA (and Basketball Australia) uses calendar year birth dates — from January 1 to December 31 — to determine age eligibility. This means all players born in the same year are treated equally, regardless of their school year.

DONT WORRY WE WILL STILL HAVE DIVISIONS IN EACH AGE GROUP!

For example:

* A player born 1 Jan 2010 and another born 31 Dec 2010 are in the same age group.

Keeping in mind it’s based on the end of our season 2026.

This method:

* Ensures national consistency
* Matches Basketball Australia's rules for development programs and representative teams
* Keeps the system fair and standardised across all regions and levels

Why Use Double Age Groups?

* Basketball WA chooses the double age group system because:

Aligned with National Pathways
*It mirrors Basketball Australia’s structure, making it easier for players to progress through programs like FDP, SDP, and State Team trials.

Fair Competition
* Players compete against others born in the same two-year window, keeping competition developmentally balanced and age-appropriate.

Supports Regional Participation
* Particularly for regional areas like the Great Southern, combining two years ensures enough numbers to field teams and provide meaningful competition.

Simplifies Team Selection
* Coaches and clubs can plan teams and trials more efficiently by using clearly defined age brackets based on birth year, not school year.
