5 SETUPS. 10 WEIGHT-LIMIT BREACHES. ONE BIG LESSON.

We recently assessed five different vehicle-and-trailer combinations.

Every setup exceeded at least one of its rated limits.... even when several of the headline numbers looked fine.

Across the five setups, we found:

❌ Towing capacity exceeded by up to 248 kg
❌ Combined GCM exceeded by up to 450 kg
❌ Vehicle GVM exceeded
❌ Trailer ATM and GTM exceeded
❌ Rear-axle limits exceeded

Here’s the part that catches people out:

One setup was 990 kg under GCM....but exceeded its towing capacity.

Another was 500 kg under GCM and 200 kg under GVM—but its rear axle was overweight.

One passed every individual vehicle and trailer check—yet the complete combination was 160 kg over GCM.

And another was under its vehicle GVM while exceeding five other ratings.

The takeaway is simple:

Being under GVM doesn’t mean you’re under GCM.
Being under GCM doesn’t mean your axles are okay.
And having a trailer under ATM doesn’t guarantee you’re within the vehicle’s towing capacity.

Every rating matters.

Over the coming days, we’ll break down each setup separately and show exactly where it passed, where it didn’t, and what every tow operator can learn from it.

Most people don’t deliberately overload their setup. It happens gradually.

A bullbar here...
A canopy there...
Drawers, batteries, fridge, recovery gear, passengers, fuel, water, bikes, tools…
then you hook up the caravan...
and add tow ball mass to the tow vehicle as well.

Suddenly,





the numbers can look VERY DIFFERENT from the brochure.

And knowing your total weight alone isn’t enough.

A proper real-world weigh should help you understand:

✅ Caravan axle loads

✅ How the load is distributed across the entire combination

You can potentially be within one overall limit while exceeding another,

which is why knowing where the weight is sitting matters!

Your setup should ideally be weighed as close as possible to how you actually travel i.e. with passengers, fuel, water, food, gear and accessories included.
