If you read that and felt like I was describing something a little too specific to you...I see you.

I have coached hundreds of women living exactly this. And here is what I know for certain: you are not the problem. You have simply never been shown how to access everything you already carry.

That is the work I do. It starts with one conversation.

If this landed, comment “ME” below or send me a message. I would love to hear your story.

And if a friend comes to mind while you’re reading this... tag her. She might need to see this today.

You built a partnership that survived a move to another country, a new language for at least one of you, two demanding careers, and small children who need everything, right now, always.

That is not nothing.

And still... some weeks you and your partner are more like co-managers of a household than two people who chose each other. You hand off the school pickup, the bedtime, the logistics. You have not had an actual conversation, the real kind, since before the move got complicated.

That is not your marriage falling apart. That is what happens when two people are building something this big, in real time, without the village either of you grew up with.

Connection doesn’t ask for hours you don’t have. It asks for the ten minutes you do have, claimed on purpose, not left to whatever is left over at the end of the day.

Ten minutes of all of you.

..not half-listening while you mentally run through
the list or not physically in the room but somewhere
else entirely.

All of you. That is what they remember.

Summer has this beautiful way of slowing things
down and also piling everything on at once. No school schedule, longer days, less structure, more noise, more togetherness...more of everything.

..and somewhere in the middle of all of it, you
forget to fill yourself back up.

So you show up, every single day, because that
is who you are.

..and showing up tired, stretched thin, and running
on whatever is left at the end of the day...that is not the same as being there.

After years of working with
parents navigating this, all I can say is:

Presence is not a discipline; it is a result.

The result of a parent who is also, quietly and
without guilt, taking care of themselves.

So this summer...do one thing for you, every day.

Not optional. Not the last thing on the list. First.

Save this if you needed the reminder.

Summer is beautiful and relentless.

Kids home, bags packed, airports, in-laws, different expectations about how the day should go…

…and through all of it, you and your partner are
doing what you always do: holding it together.

8 years building a multicultural family across borders and working with many others has taught me that the strongest currency you have in your partnership is not patience or compromise; it is kindness.

It’s not the grand gesture kind.

More so the quiet, ordinary, wednesday afternoon kind.

A hand on the shoulder when the other one is fumbling through a conversation in their second language.

A “I’ve got the kids, go rest” without being asked.

A moment of softness when stress could have easily turned into something sharp.

That kindness ripples.

Your children feel it.
Your family feels it.
Your partnership feels it long after summer ends.

Save this one and share it with the partner who is in the trenches with you.

My husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table after the kids went to bed.

Both of us on our phones. Both of us exhausted. Both of us... somewhere else entirely.

And I remember looking up and thinking: when did we stop asking each other how we are actually doing?

Not “did you book the appointment” or “whose turn is it to do pickup tomorrow.” How are you actually doing... in this country, in this life, in this version of yourself that neither of us fully planned for?

Here is something I see again and again in the families I work with.

We pour so much energy into making sure our children feel seen in their expat experience. We read the books on third culture kids. We ask them about their friendships, their feelings, their sense of belonging. We are paying attention.

And our partners... we assume they are fine.

We assume that because they are capable, because they chose this too, because they are not the ones having a meltdown at the dinner table, they must be okay.

But your partner has also lost their village. They have also navigated offices and meetings and daily life in a culture that is not fully theirs. They have also had moments of wondering who they are becoming here, whether this version of their life matches the one they imagined.

They are just quieter about it. Or they have learned to be.

Making someone feel seen, heard, and understood is the loudest way to love them.

Not the flowers. Not the weekend away. Not the grand gesture.

The moment you put down your phone, look across the table, and ask: “How are you really doing in all of this?”

That question can change everything.

Tonight, if you can, ask it.

Summer break is not just for your kids.

I know, nobody told you that...

You have been planning the activities, booking the camps, figuring out the childcare gaps, managing the extra noise and energy and snack requests... all while keeping everything else running.

And somewhere in all of that, you forgot that you are also allowed to exhale.

Watch these two men.

They are not performing for anyone. They are not on a schedule. They are not thinking about what comes next. They are completely, fully, unapologetically IN it... and everyone around them has stopped to feel it too.

That is what happens when an adult gives themselves full permission to play.

Not productivity. Not optimization. Not even rest as recovery so you can go back to doing more.

Just... aliveness. For its own sake.

Here is what I want you to sit with this summer: your children do not need a perfectly organised holiday. They do not need the itinerary or the educational activities or the crafts you saved on Pinterest in March.

They need to see you like this, present, lit up, and fully here.

Because the most powerful thing you can model for a third culture kid who is still figuring out where they belong, is a parent who knows how to be at home in their own body, in this moment, in this life.

Summer is the invitation. The longer evenings, the slower mornings, the collective exhale that the whole world takes together.

So what is your version of the fire?

What is the thing that makes you stop thinking and start feeling? Find it this summer. Do it in front of your kids. Let them see what it looks like when you are fully alive.

That is not indulgence, that is leadership.

Here’s to building a life that finally feels like yours,
❤️‍🔥
